Annie S., a certified nursing assistant at Islands Hospice in Honolulu, is this quarter’s Makana Pono awardee. She supports medical staff by assisting patients with various conditions, helping with personal hygiene, feeding, medication reminders and monitoring vital signs. Annie, who has been with Islands Hospice for nine years, selected Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children to receive the $5,000 donation.

Annie chose the hospital because of its deep commitment for Hawaiʻi's youngest and most vulnerable patients–a cause close to her heart.

“I wanted to help an organization that takes care of children,” Annie said. “Islands Hospice has worked closely with Kapi‘olani in the past through events like the annual Radiothon and previous Makana Pono awards.”

Islands Hospice previously supported donated to Kapi‘olani in 2022 when former Makana Pono awardee Cheryl M. directed her donation to the hospital’s Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, inspired by a deeply personal experience. Her selection also launched Islands Hospice's strong relationship with Kapi‘olani, and sparked our ongoing involvement in the annual Radiothon for Kids, which raises crucial funds for pediatric health care services, equipment and essential treatments.

Islands Hospice team members recently attended the Kapi‘olani Miracle Network’s All Partner Celebration, where 11-year-old Aurelia Awa from ‘Ewa Beach was named the 2025 Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals Champion for Kapi‘olani. Born with leukemia, Aurelia overcame losing her eyesight, heart failure and nutritional challenges. Now, as a champion, she shares her powerful story to inspire hope and support for countless keiki receiving care at Kapi‘olani. Funds raised through community efforts remain in Hawai‘i, directly benefiting programs, critical care transport teams and lifesaving equipment.

Mahalo, Annie, for selecting an organization dedicated to improving the lives of children and families in Hawai‘i.
