As a veteran himself, and a member of the Disabled American Veterans (DAV), Paul understands just how valuable nonprofits can be to help cut heroes and families cut through the red tape to obtain the benefits and resources owed. He selected DAV to receive his $5,000 Makana Pono contribution.

For a child with a critical illness, making a wish come true can do so much more than lift spirits. Make-A-Wish Hawaii has granted thousands of wishes to Hawaii’s keiki over the years and our Makana Pono awardee has chosen to help direct her $5,000 donation to Make-A-Wish to bring more wishes to life.

Makana Pono: Employee Giving Program
Lanakila Multipurpose Senior Center (LMPSC) is a much-needed hub for seniors. It is a place for exercise, socialization and education. Located in Kalihi, it is the largest senior center in the state, serving nearly 1,500 seniors. With COVID-19 presenting new challenges, especially for our kupuna, Islands Hospice Social Worker, Iris Hashimoto, selected the senior center to direct her $5,000 Makana Pono donation.

Nursing school can be expensive, but Islands Hospice nurse practitioner Harold Palma hopes to help ease the burden for students of Filipino ancestry. In doing so, he wants to inspire the next generation of students to pursue a path in nursing.
